Daler Mehndi was sentenced to two years in prison in a 2003 case involving human trafficking, and he was transported to the Patiala jail on Thursday as a result. The musician had appealed the lower court's decision to condemn him and sentence him to two years in prison as well as a $1,000 fine in March 2018.

After that, Mehndi was freed on a bail bond. The court of Additional Session Judge H S Grewal dismissed his appeal against a lower court order. Mehndi was transported to the Patiala jail after his medical check was completed and the appeal was rejected.

On the reality series Swayamvar: Mika Di Vohti was seen encouraging her brother Mika Singh as he set out on a quest to find his bride before his sentence was upheld. As per reports on India TV, since Mehndi was given a prison term, there has been concern about Mika Di Vohti's future on the show and if he will stay with his family or continue to appear in it. The creators of Mika Di Vohti have not officially confirmed Mika's departure from the show, despite questions being raised about it. Star Bharat has begun broadcasting the reality show.

PTI reported that in Mehndi's case, a complaint made by a man named Bakshish Singh led to the Patiala police booking both him and his brother, Shamsher Mehndi. Later, more than 30 additional complaints surfaced accusing the brothers of fraud. The brothers, according to the complainants, were supposed to help them relocate illegally to the United States by taking "passage money" from them, but they were unable to do so. The musician was allegedly paid money to convey the complaint to Canada, according to the complainants.

Furthermore, it was claimed that the Mehndi brothers led two troupes in 1998 and 1999, during which 10 people were allegedly dropped off in the US without authorization. Mehndi allegedly dropped off three girls in San Francisco while travelling to the US with an actress. In October 1999, the brothers travelled to the US with a group of actors, and three boys were "dropped off" in New Jersey during that trip.

In a raid on the singer's Connaught Place offices in New Delhi, the Patiala police recovered case files of those who had given the Mehndi brothers passage money.
