After winning one accolade after another, director Sudipto Roy’s Tasher Ghawr has done it again. The movie was recently awarded at the New York Indian Film Festival 2021, with the Best Short Narrative award. The film has now been selected to be screened at the Indian Film Festival at Cincinnati in Ohio, USA.

The story revolves around the pains of a housewife and her troubled state of mind, during the Coronavirus lockdown, as she speaks up breaking the fourth wall and narrates her dark tale of abuse and humiliation while immersing herself in her solitude as a means to escape her demons – which live with her. It chronicles a tragic tale of domestic violence that has been, unfortunately, quite common during the lockdown.

The central role of Sujata has been played by the noted actress Swastika Mukherjee, as she manages to dive deep into the many folds and intricate shades of her character, with a heart-aching monologue. What seems to be so simple and mundane at first is soon revealed to be a remorseful story of a woman stuck inside her home, battling the abuse of her domineering husband and silenced within her world.

With a unique and powerful narrative in place, this film is one-of-a-kind and worthy of all the appreciation it is receiving. Shot during the lockdown period and slated to be a theatrical release, the movie was streamed on Hoichoi in September 2020, due to the pandemic.
