The producer, who celebrates her birthday today, paved a new path for the illustrious banner across various mediums
The truth of the matter in Telugu cinema is that it celebrates star sons with greater gusto and enthusiasm than its daughters. There are only a handful of examples where the second generation of women belonging to illustrious industry families are even handed over the reins to set up a path towards their future in films.
Swapna Dutt, daughter of veteran producer Ashwini Dutt, stood apart from the rest. For the unversed, Ashwini Dutt is a leading producer and the founder of Vyjayanthi Movies. The iconic banner enjoys an undisputed reputation and respect from Telugu viewers and the industry alike for over four and a half decades. There’s not a single Telugu star they haven’t produced a movie with from NTR, ANR to the likes of Jr NTR, Pawan Kalyan, Ram Charan and Mahesh Babu today.
The transition phase of every banner is crucial for its survival and more so, for a banner like Vyjayanthi, this comes with an additional sense of responsibility. Being a product of a business school (Ohio University) herself, Swapna learnt the ropes in the industry with a stint in regional television (under Vyjayanthi Televentures), producing shows like Jayapradam, Jhummandi Naadam and Narthanasala, to name a few.
The biggest setback for her home banner Vyjayanthi Movies came in the form of Shakti, an ambitious fantasy film headlined by Jr NTR. While success and failure are part and parcel of showbiz, Shakti came as a rude shock to brand ‘Vyjayanthi’, shaking its foundation. It required someone at the helm who learnt their lessons quickly and took a great leap of faith to get the banner back on track.
Meanwhile, attempts like Om Shanti, Sarocharu (under Three Angels Studio) showcased the banner’s ability to think out of the box. However, it was with the success of Yevade Subrahmanyam under Swapna Cinema, the subsidiary division of Vyjayanthi Movies, the industry acknowledged that the second generation of the Ashwini Dutt family had indeed arrived.
Nani’s Yevade Subrahmanyam was shot under challenging circumstances at the Everest base camp. The fact that Swapna backed a cathartic, coming-of-age film with a newcomer showed she was a producer of good taste, who looked at the larger picture. Swapna Dutt’s role in shaping the future of Vyjayanthi Movies and Swapna Cinema has been instrumental, to say the least.
She took probably the biggest gamble of her career with Mahanati, the ambitious biopic on yesteryear actress Savithri, set between the 1950s and the 1980s, and put the project together from scratch. It was her unnerving conviction to tell the story of Savithri that made Mahanati happen and then, the rest was history. Swapna Cinema had no reason to look back ever since.
Most of the actors and crew associated with Swapna have consistently applauded her ability to be ahead of the curve and be a taskmaster with a vision. Under her leadership, Vyjayanthi Movies has also made its presence felt in the digital space with the multi-starrer show Gangstars for Amazon Prime Video and Mail on aha. The latter is one of the most acclaimed originals in the Telugu digital space to date.
It takes tact and smartness to produce successful small-budget films, more so because they aren’t backed by leading stars and need to stand out for their content. Jathi Ratnalu turned out to be another jewel in the crown for Swapna Cinema. When there was great pressure from the industry to deliver a hit in the post-COVID-19 phase, then came Sita Ramam.
Sita Ramam broke all box-office myths and is having a great run in the cinemas today. The Dulquer Salmaan, Mrunal Thakur starrer was promoted well in multiple languages with a perfect strategy - the freshness of the lead pair, the earnestness in the execution and the soothing music were the pillars behind this blockbuster.
Swapna Dutt’s next major releases include Nandini Reddy’s Anni Manchi Sakunamule, Roshann’s second project as a lead besides the pan-Indian film Project K starring Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Disha Patani and Amitabh Bachchan. Swapna is a fine example and an inspiration for many women and aspirant female producers - she respected her roots, carved her own identity and is all charged up for the future. No wonder Ashwini Dutt is a proud father today!
