Suriya starrer film Soorarai Pottru has bagged seven major awards at the South Indian International Movie Awards (SIIMA) which was held on September 18 and 19 in Hyderabad. SIMMA recognises the efforts of the actors and technicians of the south Indian film industry.

The film has won awards for the best film, best actor (Suriya), best actress by the critic (Aparna Balamurali), best director (Sudha Kongara), best music director (GV Prakash), best cameraman (Niketh Bommi Reddy), and best male playback singer (Harish Sivaramakrishnan). The actor to social media to share the news.

Though Suriya couldn't be there at the award function in Hyderabad, he shared a video thanking his fans for all the love and appreciation that they showered on him and the film. He also expressed gratitude towards the director Sudha and the entire team of the film. He said: "We have been receiving immense love and appreciation for the film. I am thankful to all fans for it. Soorarai Pottru is one of the most important projects of my career which made me believe in good again. I'd like to thank the director Sudha and the entire team and also extend hearty wishes to all the award winners."

Soorarai Pottru is based on the life of Captain Gopinath who pioneered a low-cost airline and made it possible for a common man to fly for as low as Re 1. The film is available to stream on Amazon Prime.

The film had also earlier bagged the best film and best actor awards at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne. The plans for a Hindi remake of the film are also underway.
