The trailer of the Ranjith Sankar directorial was dropped today, ahead of its OTT release date of September 23
Single-actor films have always managed to have enough elements to keep the audience hooked. Jayasurya’s Sunny, which will release on Amazon Prime Video on September 23, seems to be no different.
While the teaser of Jayasurya’s film promised a feel-good movie about a musician searching for hope and inspiration, the trailer that dropped today had more intriguing elements along with revealing some of the other characters that would take the story forward.
The video has Jayasurya stuck in a hotel room, trying to make acquaintances, recalling his old friends and rekindling his past relationships, and also being hounded by someone whom he owes money to. The audience also gets to hear a frustrated Sunny talk to a doctor about the voices he begins to hear in isolation.
The film’s director Ranjith Sankar in a recent interview told us, “Sunny is not a thriller; it’s a human story with some suspense. After I wrote the first draft, I really liked it as something you can read, but to translate it on screen is a different exercise. In Buried and 127 Hours, there’s that element of whether the characters will escape that keeps the audience intrigued. Sunny didn’t have those, and so to make it interesting, it required a lot of layers and plot points.”
That’s how despite the movie only having Jayasurya’s Sunny on screen, the filmmaker thought about adding other characters. “I began thinking of Sunny’s wife, lover, acquaintance, a close friend, a friend who betrayed him, a sister, a police officer and a doctor who helps him and is like his father, with whom he shares a special relationship. These characters are played by great actors like Siddique, Innocent, Mamta Mohandas, Vijayaraghavan, Sshivada, Aju Varghese and others. They come in different forms in the film and add more layers to the film,” the director said.
The movie revolves around Sunny, who returns to his hometown in Kerala from Dubai, and is quarantined in a hotel room amid the pandemic. It explores how Sunny tries to find hope through encounters with some strangers. The movie marks the eight collaboration between Ranjith and Jayasurya.
