Actress Abhirami took everyone by surprise when she announced that she and her husband had adopted a baby girl a year ago and had named her Kalki. Adoption is a topic that has been discussed quite often in Tamil cinema as well. Here are a few examples of actresses playing mothers to adopted children in Kollywood.

Suhasini in En Bommukutty Ammavukku (1988)

When Lakshmi (Suhasini) and Vinod (Sathyaraj) lose their daughter in an accident, they decide to adopt Tinnu (Geethu Mohandas) from an orphanage. But when the child's biological parents start looking for their child, things get complicated. En Bommukutty Ammavukku is a remake of Fazil's Malayalam film Ente Mamattukkuttiyammakku (1983), which had Shalini playing the adopted child.

Meena in Rhythm (2000)

Meena played Chithra, mother to a young boy in director Vasanth's Rhythm.  When Chithra's husband Srikanth (Ramesh Aravind) passes away in an accident, she decides to fulfill his wish of adopting a child from an orphanage. Later, she develops a liking towards Karthikeyan (Arjun) and towards the end, Karthikeyan, Chithra and Shiva become a family.

Simran in Kannathil Muthamittal (2002)

Mani Ratnam's Kannathil Muthamittal revolved around a Sri Lankan child (played by Keerthana Parthiban) who was adopted by Indian parents, played by Simran and Madhavan. The plot revolves around the child's quest to meet her biological mother amid the Sri Lankan Civil war. The film was critically acclaimed and bagged a number of awards.

The plot of the remake of the 2012 Hindi film Vicky Donor revolves around sperm donation and infertility. When Nidhi (Tanya Hope) and Prabhu (Harish Kalyan) are unable to have a child, they decide to opt for adoption instead of surrogacy. Soon, they adopt a three-year-old girl, whose parents have died in a car accident. Later, Prabhu discovers that the child is his biological kid, courtesy his sperm donation.
