Sugarless trailer: Watch Pruthvi Ambaar struggle as a young man with diabetes

The film, which will release in theatres on July 8, will mark the directorial debut of Shashidhar KM

Shashidhar KM, who has produced films like D/O Parvathamma, starring Hariprriya, and Veeram with Prajwal Devaraj, turns director with the upcoming Kannada film Sugarless. The film, starring Pruthvi Ambaar and Priyanka Thimmesh in the lead is set for a July 8 theatrical release. Sugarless will be Pruthvi’s first release as leading man since 2020’s Dia, although he will be seen in next week’s Bairagee as well.

Sugarless, according to Shashidhar, is a tale that’s novel for Kannada cinema and revolves around the struggles of the protagonist once he is diagnosed with diabetes. The film addresses questions such as ‘How can a relatively healthy 28-year-old-man have diabetes?’ as well as the related health issues one is likely to have owing to the condition. More importantly, it touches upon the stigma associated with the disease if it occurs at a young age, especially in terms of marriageability.

“Sugarless is my first film since Dia and the pandemic. I was in Mangaluru when Shashidhar sir called me and narrated the script. I was quite impressed with the story, which is a first for Kannada cinema. I got to work with veteran actor Dattanna in this film and, to be honest, I was quite nervous about sharing screen space with him. He not only made me feel comfortable on set, but watching him was also a learning experience for me. Also, although Shashidhar sir is a debutant director, at no point during the making did it feel like it was his first venture. The film might be called Sugarless, but there are a lot of sweet moments in it, be it in the romance, drama or comedy,” said Pruthvi, at the pre-release and trailer launch event of the film on Sunday.

Also starring Dharmanna Kadur and Naveen Padil, among others, in pivotal roles, Sugarless has music by Anoop Seelin. Shashidhar fills in as producer as well, for his banner, Shashidhar Studios Productions.
