Actor-singer Suchitra Krishnamoorthi has spoken candidly about her failed marriage with filmmaker Shekhar Kapur and how he was unfaithful to her. She also shared her views on why marriages break and what she learned from her experience.

Suchitra and Shekhar got married in 1999 and have a daughter named Kaveri. They divorced in 2007. In an interview with Bollywood Bubble, Suchitra revealed that Shekhar cheated on her with a friend of hers, who was also married at that time.

She said, "He had an affair with a friend of mine, who was married to somebody else. And I was like, 'Wow, this is really low.' I mean, you don't do that to a friend. You don't do that to anybody. And I think that was the breaking point for me."

Suchitra also said that she tried to save her marriage for the sake of her daughter, but realised that it was not worth it. She said, "I think marriages break because of disrespect. When you lose respect for the other person, then there is no marriage left. And I think that's what happened in my case. I lost respect for him because he was not respectful towards me."

She added, "I tried very hard to keep the marriage together because I had a young daughter. And I come from a very conservative family where divorce is not an option. But then I realised that it's better to be happy alone than to be unhappy with somebody else."

Suchitra also said that she learned to be independent and self-reliant after her divorce. She said, "I think the biggest lesson I learned from my divorce was to stand on my own feet and not depend on anybody else for anything. Because when you depend on somebody else, you give them the power to hurt you. And I think that's what I did. I gave him too much power over me."

She continued, "I think the best thing that happened to me after my divorce was that I became very self-sufficient. I learned to do everything by myself. I learned to drive, I learned to manage my finances, I learned to take care of my daughter. And I think that made me a stronger person."

On the professional front, Suchitra Krishnamoorthi was last seen in 2022’s Amazon Prime Video show Guilty Minds.
