Silambarasan made a successful comeback to films after a prolonged low phase, with back-to-back blockbusters Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu and Maanaadu. As reported earlier, STR is set to team up with young filmmaker Desingh Periyasamy for an ambitious period action film very soon. The project, which is tentatively titled STR 48, is bankrolled by Kamal Haasan’s home banner RKFI (Raaj Kamal Films Internationa). However, the grapevine suggests that RKFI backed out of the Silambarasan starrer, leaving the film in trouble.
According to the rumour mills, STR 48 landed in trouble after Kamal Haasan’s home production banner RKFI backed out of the project. The grapevine suggests that the banner decided to quit the Desingh Periyasamy directorial due to its funding issues. If the reports are to be believed, both Silambarasan and director Desingh are now in talks with a couple of leading Tamil production banners to take over the project. However, none of these reports are officially confirmed yet.
The speculations on RKFI’s withdrawal from STR 48 started doing rounds after the shooting of the film, which was supposed to commence in February 2024, was delayed indefinitely. After the project was put on hold, Silambarasan joined the star cast of Thug Life, the upcoming Mani Ratnam directorial which stars Kamal Haasan in the lead role. If the rumours are to be true, this is the second RKFI project that failed to take off this year. Previously, the banner had dropped the Kamal Haasan starrer which was supposed to be directed by H Vinoth, due to undisclosed reasons.

The untitled film, which is touted to be a period action film, is being made in two parts. From Keerthy Suresh and Pooja Hegde to Janhvi Kapoor, many popular actresses were rumoured to be in talks to play the female lead opposite Simbu in the film. According to the reports, Silambarasan is set to play a triple role in the Desingh Periyasamy film, as the protagonist, the villain, and a transgender character. The rest of the star cast and technical crew are not finalised, yet.
