Subhashree Ganguly was initially cast in the film but later stepped down for her second pregnancy
Actress Jaya Ahsan will join Srijit Mukherji's Dawsham Awbotaar as the female lead. On July 1, OTTplay reported that Jaya Ahsan might join the team. On Tuesday, the director and the production house confirmed that the actress would be part of the film. Subhashree Ganguly – who was supposed to play the female lead in this multi-starrer saga – had to step down since she is expecting her second child.

Talking to OTTplay, Srijit said, “Dawsham Awbotaar has a very pivotal character called Maitree for which we have cast Subhashree Ganguly. This character has a lot of physically exhausting scenes. We are anticipating a lot of duress. This is why, given the exciting news of Subhashree’s second pregnancy and her medical condition, we mutually decided not to work together in Dawsham.” Wishing the actress and her husband Raj Chakraborty, the director said, “May Raj and Subhashree’s life be full of such brilliant news. We are very happy for them.”
The filmmaker admitted that his team reached out to a number of other actresses. “We considered various options. We asked for available dates from many actresses. However, considering date availability, acting prowess, and considering the history of successful films during Puja, we locked Jaya Ahsan. And we sent the script only to her,” he said.
Srijit and Jaya worked together in the 2018 Puja release Ek Je Chhilo Raja. Now they are back together for yet another Puja release. “I am very happy to be back with Jaya. In fact, the last time we worked together was in Ek Je Chilo Raja. That is one of the most special films in my life. I am delighted to work with Jaya again. Jaya has been a successful person in the past few years. She swept all the awards for her performance in Binisutoy and Robibaar and her part in Ardhangini was widely appreciated. I hope this will also be a new chapter of a great journey. Looking forward to working with her,” he said.
Billed as a cop universe drama, the film also features Prosenjit Chatterjee, Jisshu U Sengupta, and Anirban Bhattacharya. The film is set to go on the floors on July 20.
