There was a time when Bengali cinephiles used to get one Srijit Mukherji film every Puja. From Rajkahini to Ek Ke Chhilo Raja and a lot more -- many hit films came from his kitty during the autumn festivities for the audience. With Covid and his schedule in Mumbai stalled that trend for a few years. Now, Srijit is back, and that too with a thriller, Dawshom Awbotaar. The film has a super star cast with Prosenjit Chatterjee, Jaya Ahsan, Anirban Bhattacharya, and Jisshu U Sengupta. The trailer of the film is out and has kept the fans busy with speculations.

Does a Puja release bear more significance to the director than his other releases? Srijit can’t agree more. In a chat with OTTplay, he said, a Puja release is a ‘cultural consciousness’ for him. He said, “Pujo release is very important for me. I have a 100% track record with my Puja releases with all of them being blockbusters. There was a time when some friends used to call me ‘Sharodiya Srijit (Durga Puja-special Srijit)’.”

For Srijit, there is and always will be a difference between Puja releases and other films. Talking about his trend of releasing big films during Puja, the director said, “Releasing my films on Durga Puja has been going on for a while. A generation of youngsters watched my films in Puja. They have nostalgia attached to it. Hence, a Puja release is a cultural consciousness for me. There is and always will be a difference between Puja release and non-Puja release.”
