Despite court orders and government restrictions, illegal firecrackers are widely available in the market.
Diwali or Deepavali is the festival of lights. However, traditionally, this festival involves bursting a lot of firecrackers. Despite court orders and government restrictions, illegal firecrackers are widely available in the market.
In Bengal, the government has limited the cracker bursting hours. Moreover, there is a restriction on the sound decibels of firecrackers. However, all these regulations go in vain. Old people, children, and pets suffer the most. Actress Sreelekha Mitra protested against such abuse.
Sreelekha posted several photos on social media and showed crackers were rampantly used on the Kali Puja night. Sreelekha has many pets at her place who are scared. The actress wrote, “How does the state government allow this? How do people do this after telling them repeatedly? At least think of the aged people. You may be very happy, but it does not mean that a life will be lost owing to your happiness.”
Sreelekha’s posts showed how her pets were scared and hiding under the bed. She sought the help of Kolkata Police. She wrote, “Thank you #lalbazaarpolice for the prompt action folks dial 100, they r really helpless blame this misfortune on the vote monger politicians of our great state.' Many people supported Sreelekha. Some of them wrote that this torture went on till 1.30 AM. Some people expressed anger against the police for not taking action in spite of the abuses happening in front of them.”
