Ted Sarandos confirmed the report recently.
Netflix's breakout hit of 2021, Squid Game will be renewed for a second season, according to co-CEO and chief content officer Ted Sarandos. He was questioned whether the violent South Korean survival drama, which has scored as the company's No. 1 most-viewed series, would get a second season at Netflix's fourth-quarter 2021 earnings interview.
According to Variety, Sarandos said that the Squid Game universe is only getting started. He categorized the series as part of Netflix's increasing bouquet of entertainment properties, including live experiences, games, and merchandise, that the firm sees as having development potential outside of the core streaming service.
Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of Squid Game had previously stated that the hit series would be renewed for a second season.
He told the Associated Press that there had been a lot of pressure, a lot of demand, and a lot of love for a second season. So it's almost as if the viewers didn't give them a choice! He confirmed that there would be a second season and said he was working on a plan.
Hwang said Lee Jung-jae, who plays Seong Gi-hun in Squid Game will also return.
Squid Game is by far Netflix's most popular show, with 1.65 billion hours of content consumed in the first 28 days of its release, according to the streaming service's calculations.
In Season 1, a secret organization invites 456 cash-strapped competitors to participate in a series of children's games with fatal consequences for a share of the $45.6 billion prize pool (about $38.5 million).
The series created history by becoming the first non-English-language series and the first Korean series to be nominated for cast in a drama series, actor in a drama series (Lee Jung-jae), actress in a drama series (Jung Ho-yeon), and stunt ensemble at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards.
In addition, Squid Game took home three Golden Globe Awards, including best TV drama and a supporting actor award for O Yeong-su. The show was also nominated for three Critics' Choice Awards and won the Gotham Award for Best Breakthrough Series.
