Spider-Man: No Way Home: Willem Dafoe says he did not want Green Goblin to end up being a meme

Spider-Man: No Way Home became one of the biggest movies of all time and one of the things that drew a large number of fans to the theatres was the involvement of actors such as Willem Dafoe and Alferd Molina reprising their roles as the supervillains from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man.

Dafoe has now revealed the criteria he had to reprise his role as Green Goblin, which he shared with producer Amy Pascal and director Jon Watts when they approached him with the offer.

Dafoe wanted the role to be more than a cameo and wanted to be involved in action scenes as he did not want Green Goblin to end up as a meme.

“I really didn’t want to do a cameo. I wanted to make sure there was something pretty substantial to do that wasn’t just a tip of the hat.” said Dafoe in an interview with The New York Times.

He added that the other thing he said is that he wanted there to be action scenes and wanted to be in them as he enjoyed doing action and that this is the only way to root the character or otherwise they just become a series of memes.

Dafoe made his debut as Norman Osbourn and Green Goblin in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man which came out in 2002. His performance as the menacing antagonist won over the fans and critics, and has become a fan-favourite since.

Many Norman Osboune and Green Goblin moments from the movies were also celebrated by the fans, becoming popular memes. So it is understandable why Dafoe wanted more screen time in No Way Out in order to do a good job yet again.
