Now You Know

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse the sequel to the Academy Award-winning 2018 film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is swinging towards a monumental success. In fact, the film has managed the biggest opening weekend for an animated feature in India so far. The superhero film has been lauded by both fans and critics and is already one of the favourites to win an Oscar next year for Best Animated Feature. For today’s Now You Know we take a look at some of the lesser-known facts about the film.

  1. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse features a runtime of 2 hours and 20 minutes, making it the longest American animated film ever made. The previous record was held by the 2012 animated film Consuming Spirits which clocked in a runtime of 2 hours 16 minutes.
  2. One of the most popular, and to some, the most definitive version of Spider-Man, is the Peter Parker version of Spider-Man featured in the award-winning 2018 game, Marvel's Spider-Man, developed by Insomniac. It has been confirmed that the Insomniac does, in fact, make it into the film, thereby confirming that both universes are connected. It remains to be seen if Miles Morales/Spider-Man from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will appear in the upcoming game Marvel's Spider-Man 2.
  3. Writers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller initially informed Sony that they would only require a team as big as the first film to complete the sequel. However, the film ended up having a team which broke the record for the largest crew for any animated movie to date, pulling in over 1,000 artists to take on various production, technical and other creative roles.
  4. Lord and Miller were reportedly roped in to helm The Flash for Warner Brothers. However, the duo left the project due to creative differences and the uncertainty in WB and DC at the time. Coincidentally, The Flash, directed by Andrés Muschietti, is set to release next week and its story will also feature multiverses, parallel universes, and multiple versions of its lead character just like in the case of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Coincidence? We think not.
  5. It is common knowledge that Spider-Man’s home base has forever been New York City. In order to pay homage to the Big Apple and the friendly neighbourhood vigilante, several departments of animation teams were named after the various neighbourhoods of New York City such as Bedford, Chelsea, Weaver, Stonewall, Mulberry, Flatbush, and Elm.
  6. Did you know that Oscar Issac, who plays the role of Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099 is the first actor to play three different iconic Marvel characters in different projects? Apart from being Spider-Man, Issac has also slipped into the role of the legendary X-Men villain Apocalypse in the 2016 film X-Men: Apocalypse. He also played the titular role of Moon Knight in the critically-acclaimed 2022 Disney+ series, which is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
