Bollywood actor Sonu Sood, who was last seen in Kannada cinema in the 2019 mythological drama Kurukshetra, is back this week with Sreemanta, a film about farmers. Directed by Ramesh Hassan, the film has Sonu in the role of a farmer with the story exploring how technology has impacted the agriculture sector. Sreemanta joins the list of films vying for a share of the box office on May 19. As of now, Daredevil Musthafa, Suman and Jersey Number 10 are also in the lineup.

The producers were apparently convinced by Ramesh’s conviction in the story, where he gave his hero a plough instead of a machete, which is quite unlike routine commercial cinema in Kannada. As for getting Sonu to play the lead, the team says that the actor is a real-life hero for the entire nation, for all the humanitarian activities he did during the Covid pandemic. Sreemanta, according to the makers, has an important message for society, which is told through Sonu’s character. The whole world recognizes Sonu today, so having him convey the message of how important a farmer is in society today will have greater reach and impact. For Ramesh, the idea behind making Sreemanta was to present village life to a larger audience. “It’s a beautiful way of life, filled with a lot of happiness, which is what I wanted to project with my film,” says the filmmaker.

Sreemanta is a film that was four years in the making, owing to the pandemic break, but the team was determined to complete and bring their tale to audiences. The film, says the team, is a must-watch in theatres, as it is content-rich movie with the right commercial elements. Beside Sonu, the film also stars Vaishnavi Chandran, Vaishnavi Pathwardhan, Kranthi, Kalyani, Charanraj, Ramesh Bhat, Sadhu Kokila, Raju Thalikote, Ravishankar Gowda, Giri, Madhugiri Prakash, Kuri Ranga, Bank Manjanna, Basavaraju Hassan and many more.
