Actress Soha Ali Khan is playing a journalist in the upcoming women-led web series Hush Hush on Prime Video, also featuring Juhi Chawla, Ayesha Jhulka, Shahana Goswami, Kritika Kamra, Karishma Tanna
Actress Soha Ali Khan is quite excited about her upcoming web series titled Hush Hush. She feels with the growth of OTT platforms that are celebrating more diverse content and breaking stereotypes, women of every age group are finding the right on-screen representation.
Starting her career in the film industry back in 2004, with Dil Maange More, the actress has also appeared in films like Rang De Basanti, Khoya Khoya Chand, Mumbai Meri Jaan, and Midnight's Children among others.
However, she recalls how after a certain point in her career she realised that opportunities are getting narrowed down for her as she was growing older and filmmakers were not offering enough substantial work to her in mainstream cinema.
On Tuesday, Soha was present at the press conference for the trailer launch of her new show Hush Hush. During the event, she said, “I absolutely think that the time has changed for the best now because honestly, when I started my acting career, I did not imagine myself represented on-screen in my 40s, so effectively that we have today. And I think that change was entirely possible due to OTT platforms and such powerful storytelling.
”
“As Tanuja said that we have a long way to go through but it is a good change. I think today, all of us, on the stage and part of the show, are fortunate. There are more female talents out there who also deserve equal opportunity. Yes, we are scratching the surface and Prime Video, and Abundantia Entertainment are supporting these stories that have an audience. So yes, we all are happy that things are changing but we should inspire more women to join the force. Talent should get its due."
"Having said that, at a personal level, I am really excited because as I said, earlier the filmmakers did not know what to do with me because I am in my 40s. We had two kinds of roles for women, either heroin or the mother of the hero. Obviously, there was an inhibition to playing the mother of the hero in the film! So, then we would hang on for 10 more years and once you are in your 50s you can play the mother! (laughs) Thank God that mindset does not exist anymore and filmmakers know that we really have a lot to offer. We have something to do on-screen," she further added.
The show Hush Hush revolves around five women coming from different walks of life. The show is made by an all-women cast and crew as from the creator of the show, to the writer, and cinematographer, all the technicians were female on the sets of the show.
Soha will be seen playing the character of a former journalist in Hush Hush and according to the actress, it was one of her childhood wishes that got fulfilled.
"I wanted to be a journalist as a youngster, it was one of the many dreams that I had like I wanted to be a lawyer. I am fond of reading and writing also. So, I am very excited to play the journalist and also be part of such an interesting show. Working with a director like Tanuja is such a delight because this show really has nothing to do with glamour but is very raw, real, and cut down to the basic emotions. Cannot really wait for the audience to watch!" said Soha.
Produced by Vikram Malhotra under Abundantia Entertainment and co-created by acclaimed director Tanuja Chandra, the web series is written by Juhi Chaturvedi.
Hush Hush, also featuring - Kritika Kamra, Shahana Goswami, Karishma Tanna, Juhi Chawla and Ayesha Jhulka - will release on September 22, on Prime Video.
