The post-apocalyptic thriller, which is based on the 1982 French graphic novel Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob, has Daveed Diggs, Sean Bean and Jennifer Connelly in the lead.
Back in 2013, Bong Joon-ho, who is more popular these days for his Oscar-winning The Parasite, made a film based on the 1982 French graphic novel Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob, called Snowpiercer, with Chris Evans in the lead. The premise of the film was simple – after man’s efforts to reverse global warming result in a devastating freeze, a gigantic, perpetually moving train that circles the globe carries the remnants of humanity. It’s like Noah’s Ark, only here, it is a train, where a class struggle breaks out between the haves and the have nots.
When this was then picked up for a TV show adaptation, the question was – how much more can you expand on this simple storyline. Well, apparently a lot. The show is already two seasons old, a third is coming next January and a fourth has been commissioned. The first season was a lot like the film and while the class war was a central plot, there was also a murder mystery that needed solving. By the end of the season, it was also revealed that Snowpiercer was not the only train carrying the last of humanity. Turns out that there’s another one, which has onboard the man who engineered both trains – Snowpiercer and Big Alice – Mr Wilford.
Season 2 was mostly about the power struggle between the leaders on both trains and a glimmer of hope for humanity when the science points towards the possibility of the earth thawing and for them to be able to leave the train again. Season 3, we are told, will introduce a new character, played by Archie Panjabi, who is not a passenger from either train, pointing to the possibility of there having been other survivors on earth during the seven-eight years that Snowpiercer has been circling the globe.
The popular TNT show, which drops episodically a day later on Netflix is set for return on January 25, with a 10-episode run that will end on March 29, 2022. Snowpiercer stars Daveed Diggs, Sean Bean, Jennifer Connelly, Alison Wright and Rowan Blanch, among many others.
