How much of your talent can you owe it to your genes? One can't help but ask this question while listening to the melliflous voice of Vasudev Krishna, son of noted playback singer and vocalist P Unnikrishnan. Unnikrishnan, earlier this Friday, had released a heartwarming recreation of the popular song Anbe Sugama from K Balachander's film Paarthale Paravasam on his Youtube channel. Sung by his son Vasudev Krishna and Utthara Pattathil, shot exquisitely amidst a scenic river backdrop by Gowtham Rajendran, the cover version is truly a balm for the soul.

For the uninitiated, Anbe Sugama (also referred to as Azhage Sugama), originally rendered by singers Srinivas and Sadhana Sargam, arrives at a crucial juncture in the film when the lead couple decide to go their separate ways but it doesn't stop them from truly missing each other's presence and all their happy memories. Vasudev Krishna's voice belies his age and surprisingly has the depth and maturity that a pathos song often demands. Uthara's voice is yin to his yang and ushers in the tenderness inherent in the lyrics written by Vairamathu.

All along, the up-and-coming singers keep the soul of the song intact and still make smart improvisations, ringing in a semi-classical touch to the song. The diction is perfect and the mood of the song is beautifully sustained through the rendition with very minimal instrumentation (piano). Unnikrishnan's daughter Utthara Krishnan had also won a national award for her number Azhagu from the Tamil film Saivam many years ago. Can there be anything more beautiful than the sustenance of musical legacy across generations? Spare them the nepotism angle for once.
