Filmmaker Siddharth P. Malhotra has been active for 20 years across many genres, and he has developed some expertise in medical dramas. Malhotra created two of the most watched medical dramas on television, Dill Mill Gayye and Sanjeevani. This year, he brought the genre to streaming with the web series Doctors.

Siddharth P. Malhotra on difference between television and streaming platforms

The filmmaker stresses the main distinction between the two platforms when exhibiting the genres. He told Hindustan Times that no one ever died in any of the Dill Mill Gayye or Sanjeevani episodes. There was not a single death in the nearly a 1000 episodes of medical dramas that he produced. There needs to be more of a focus on the love story and drama on television. Rules prohibit the depiction of blood or surgical procedures on television. Therefore, how does one depict the medical aspect of a medical drama?

Authenticity and realism in Doctors

Because of the lack of constraints, Malhotra was able to be more authentic. He said that every case on the show is based on real life, whether it's about euthanasia, organ donation, or the attack on police. They demonstrated the cuts and the heart using prostheses. Their actors spent two weeks learning from actual surgeons. Actually, they aimed for realism; therefore, all of the doctors in the close-ups of their hands are actual doctors.

Cast members of Doctors include Sharad Kelkar, Harleen Sethi, Viraf Patell, Aamir Ali, and Vivaan Shah, and the show features numerous plotlines and parallels.

Breaking barriers with Doctors on streaming platforms

Because they saw the possibility, Mahotra and his team were able to overcome their fears. Neither the channel nor the platform imposed any limitations on them. They were able to do something previously forbidden because of that. However, they made sure to handle it delicately.

All ten episodes of Doctors are streaming on JioCinema (OTTplay Premium).
