The hit anthology series Modern Love arrives in Chennai this week with Modern Love Chennai. It is the third Indian adaption of the popular romantic anthology series after Modern Love Mumbai and Modern Love Hyderabad. The series will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on the 18th of May and will explore unique love stories and complex relationships set in modern day Chennai. So for today’s List hai toh hit hai we take a look at some of the best anthology shows available to stream online.

Black Mirror (Netflix)

Arguably the most popular title on this list is the British anthology sci-fi series Black Mirror. Created by Charlie Brooker, each episode of the series serves as a satire or social commentary if you will, on issues plaguing the world that we inhabit and even hailing from those set in the dystopian future where technology has evolved beyond human comprehension. The sixth season of the critically-acclaimed series will be released in June and will feature five new episodes. We’re not sure if the future is orange but we’re sure it can’t be too far from the one imagined in Black Mirror.

Love Death + Robots (Netflix)

If you find Black Mirror relatively constrained in terms of exploring the world of science fiction and fantasy to the fullest extent, Love Death + Robots is the perfect anthology series for you. The Netflix original animated series is created by the brilliant minds of David Fincher and Tim Miller, and explores multiple genres including sci-fi, fantasy, horror, action, and adventure. The series is loosely adapted from the cult classic 1981 animated film Heavy Metal and offers a peek into a world where artificial intelligence matures to a point that it dares to challenge if not threaten humankind.

Unpaused

The anthology mini series Unpaused features five unique stories around themes of love, hope, and companionship. The series focuses on how the COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the lives of people across India. Each episode of the series is helmed by different filmmakers such as, The Family Man directors Raj & DK, award-winning actress/filmmaker Tannishtha Chatterjee, Baar Baar Dekho director Nitya Mehra, Kal Ho Naa Ho director Nikkhil Advani, and Avinash Arun who is best-known for directing the dark thriller web series Paatal Lok.

Modern Love (Prime Video)

The original Modern Love which released in 2019, is an American rom-com created by John Carney. The series is created by John Carney and explores the various complexities involved in love and relationships. Both seasons of the hit series feature some of the biggest names in the industry in lead roles. The series is based on the New York Times column of the same name and explores the various love stories set in the Big Apple.

Ray (Netflix)

Sayantan Mukherjee’s Ray is a Netflix original series which is adapted from the stories written by legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray. Srijit Mukherji, Vasan Bala, and Abhishek Chaubey serve as directors while Manoj Bajpayee, Ali Fazal, Harshvardhan Kapoor, and Kay Kay Menon essay prominent roles in this anthology series. The series straddles several genres including political satires and psychological thrillers.

Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities (Netflix)

Legendary horror director Guillermo del Toro serves as creator for the anthology horror series Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities. The series features a collection of short stories directed by del Toro and other horror filmmakers, featuring nail-biting stories and stunning visuals. The series also features a star-studded ensemble including Andrew Lincoln, F Murray Abraham, Rupert Grint among others.

Stories by Rabindranath Tagore (Netflix)

Set in early 20th century Bengal, Stories by Rabindranath Tagore is an anthology series based on the works of the legendary Rabindrnath Tagore. Directed by Anurag Basu, Debatma Mandal, and Tani Basu, the series focuses on the various challenges faced by the protagonists in a conservative society. The series was praised for its compelling stories and excellent production values.

Criminal (Netflix)

This police procedural anthology series is created by George Kay and Jim Field Smith, and is set in four different countries – France, Germany, Spain, and the UK. Each episode of the series is set in an interrogation room where investigators try to solve some of the most heinous crimes by questioning suspects and those related to a certain crime in an effort to secure a confession. The series shines for its compelling screenplay that keeps one hooked to the screen even though the stories progress at a measured pace.
