Shōgun shatters Emmy records with 18 wins, including Outstanding Drama Series

Shōgun earned an unprecedented 18 Emmys in total, including one for Outstanding Drama Series, proving its durability.
New and returning shows in the drama series category
In contrast to last year, when multi-season mainstays like Succession, Better Call Saul, and Yellowjackets routinely received nominations, only The Crown had previously competed for Outstanding Drama Series. Each of the other dramas that were nominated had either recently concluded a critically lauded first season such as Mr. & Mrs. Smith Fallout, 3 Body Solution, and Shōgun or were finally receiving the Emmy nominations they deserved like Slow Horses, The Gilded Age, and The Morning Show.

To top it all off, Shōgun won on Emmy Night. The series—based on the 1980 critically acclaimed miniseries and a historical novel by James Clavell about an Englishman in 17th-century Japan—received a record-breaking 25 nominations for this year's Primetime Emmys, with 14 of those nominations already won before the main event. After that, it won four more awards, breaking the previous record of HBO's 2008 miniseries John Adams which received 13.
Shōgun transitioned from limited series to drama series
The producers never intended Outstanding Drama Series to be included in the 25 nominations. Shōgun's critical success and popularity convinced the producers to start developing new seasons based on Clavell's original story. As a result, Shōgun was no longer eligible as an Outstanding Limited Series but as an Outstanding Drama Series, and it won.
Taking the stage, Executive Producer Justin Marks expressed gratitude to Hulu, Fx, and the crew responsible for bringing Shōgun to life.
"You guys greenlit a very expensive subtitled Japanese period piece whose central climax revolves around a poetry competition," he averred. "I have no idea why you did that, but thank you for your faith in this incredible team." He went on to say, "Shōgun is a show about translation, not what is lost but what is found."
Shōgun makes history with acting nominations and wins
Shōgun not only received an Outstanding Drama Series nomination, but it was also the second non-English-language series to receive such an honour, the first being Squid Game. The acting nominations went to Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, Tadanobu Asano, and Takehiro Hira. At the event, Sanada and Sawai were both named category winners.
