The upcoming Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is the MCU’s first film with an Asian superhero as the lead.
Simu Liu lambasted Disney CEO Bob Chapek for calling Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ‘an interesting experiment’ for the company. The CEO made the comments while talking about the movie’s release. The film will reportedly be released on September 3 exclusively in theatres for 45 days and then would be available to stream on the company’s OTT platform Disney+, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Chapek’s comments calling the theatre premiere an ‘experiment’ was seemingly not well-received by Simu Liu.
On his Twitter handle, the star responded to the same with a heartfelt note accompanied by a few BTS photographs from the MCU movie’s sets.
In the caption, Liu writes that they are not experiments, but rather the underdogs, the underestimated and ceiling-breakers. He ends the note signaling his excitement for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings release and calls for the fans to join them in the historic premiere.
Featuring Simu Liu as the titular character in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings the upcoming film will be the first Marvel superhero movie with an Asian lead. The film will also be Disney’s second live-action film with an Asian lead, following Mulan. The film also features Awkwafina, Meng'er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong and Michelle Yeoh in its cast. It is directed by Asian-American filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton.
Disney also irked the Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson earlier, who had filed a lawsuit against the company alleging that the contract was breached with the release of her movie on the company’s streaming platform while it was still running in theatres. The film revolves around the story of a skilled martial artist and assassin who, on choosing to live a normal life, is forced to relook at her past life.
