Onam releases are a major deal in Kerala and for Malayalis across the globe and this year had the younger generation of actors – Dulquer Salmaan, Nivin Pauly and Shane Nigam – fighting it out at the box office. The big-ticket film, of course, was meant to be Dulquer’s King of Kotha, which released a day ahead of the competition on August 24. The gangster flick, though, did not work with audiences as well as Nahas Hidayath’s action entertainer RDX. The film has been doing well across centres and in Bengaluru, for instance, it has had a five-fold increase in the number of shows.

When RDX released on August 25, it had all of 10 shows in the city. King of Kotha, got a lot more shows, but with the Kannada festival release Toby also out on the same day and Jailer still going strong, that was the best deal Nahas’ film could get. However, in the days since, RDX has been registering phenomental growth in Bengaluru, getting to 56 shows by Day 5, which it has retained on Day 9 (September 2) as well. In fact, as of this morning, 15 of these shows were registering fast-filling status.

The film, meanwhile, is built on a wafer-thin plot line and seems to have worked for audiences primarily because of its elaborate action blocks that have been choreographed by KGF -fame action coordinator duo Anbariv. The story follows two brothers – Robert and Doney – and their pal Xavier, all three of who are trained in Karate, a skillset that comes in handy whenever they are in a tight spot. When Doney’s family is then under threat, the three bandy together to safeguard them.

The film, according to reports, has already found its digital partner and will drop on Netflix. A date has not been fixed, but given the good box office report, it will probably be only after the 30-day mark.
