Mohanlal and Shaji Kailas, who were responsible for some of the biggest theatrical hits in Malayalam such as Aaraam Thampuran and Narasimham, will not be releasing their latest collaboration Alone on the big screens. Instead, the movie, which is scripted by Rajesh Jayaraman, will be a direct-to-OTT release.

Shaji had confirmed this during an interview, ahead of the release of his next film Kaduva. The director said that the movie will release on an OTT platform in August. The makers will be announcing the official release date next month.

Further on the movie, Shaji said that it’s a single hero project starring Mohanlal as Kalidas, who travels from Coimbatore to Kerala and gets stranded due to the pandemic lockdown. On how he became part of the movie, the director said that during the first lockdown, the film’s producer Antony Perumbavoor had approached him, asking if he had any scripts for small movies that they can make during the pandemic to help cinema personnel during the time of crisis. That’s how he pitched the story of Alone, which was then greenlit.

The movie had completed shooting in 2021 before Shaji moved to work on Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Kaduva, which is currently set for a theatrical release on July 7. The upcoming movie will mark Shaji’s comeback to Malayalam cinema after a gap of almost eight years.

Meanwhile, in an earlier interview with OTTplay, Mohanlal said that he found the story of Alone interesting. “It doesn’t have too many actors. It’s just me and so, we thought we could take the risk ourselves and produce the film,” he said.

The movie will mark Mohanlal’s fourth direct-to-OTT release after Drishyam 2, Bro Daddy and 12th Man. While the makers are yet to reveal the platform, it’s likely to be either Disney+ Hotstar or Amazon Prime Video.
