The 2019 film also starred Kiara Advani.
Despite being the subject of criticism, Kabir Singh had turned out to be one of the biggest hits in Shahid Kapoor’s career. Although critics and audiences alike criticised the film for some of its misogynistic elements, the film found itself as one of the top grossing Bollywood films in the year of its release. Kapoor recently opened up about how he felt that the film had entered the ‘family film’ space.
In conversation with Bombay Times, the actor addressed the delays in the release of his last outing, Jersey. Kapoor spoke of how they had waited almost two years to release the film, due to difficulties brought about by the pandemic. The film’s release had been postponed several times and even though the actor found it ‘heartbreaking’, he believed that it was the right call, as people rightfully chose not to risk their health over entertainment.
He said that as Jersey was a ‘family film’, it wasn't wise to release it at a time when people were unsure of even going outside. Kapoor then talked about Kabir Singh’s success. Despite being ‘technically an adult film’, the movie had been liked by a lot of people, and Kapoor believed that a lot of people even watched the film with their families. “Somehow, it made it to the family space despite being edgy and aggressive. Jersey is a family film because it has those emotions that you have to experience with family and friends”, he added.
Kabir Singh is the Hindi adaptation of the Telugu film Arjun Reddy, both helmed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga. In addition to Kapoor, the Hindi film also featured Kiara Advani, Adil Hussain, Nikita Dutta, Arjan Bajwa, Suresh Oberoi, Dolly Minhas and Suparna Marwah in prominent roles.
Both Kabir Singh and Jersey are available for streaming on Netflix.
