For the uninitiated, an underworld king (Mahesh Babu) becomes involved in a love affair with a journalist (Sreeleela), who is hell-bent on exposing the city's criminal activities as the film delves into the seedy underbelly of Guntur city.
Guntur Kaaram also stars Meenakshi Chaudhary, Ramya Krishna, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, and Jagapathi Babu in pivotal roles.
Critical reception and box office
Upon its release, critics were mostly scathing of the film, praising Babu's performance while criticising the directing, writing, narrative, and soundtrack.
The first-day collections at the box office revealed Guntur Kaaram's staggering Rs. 33 crore share in Telugu states. What makes these numbers noteworthy is that they represent Mahesh's career highs. Parasuram directed Mahesh Babu's film, Sarkaru Vaari Pata which had previously held the record.
Day one earnings for the action drama in Telangana were Rs. 11.50 crore, which is the highest for Mahesh ever. However, today the film will face tough competition from Venkatesh's Saindhav and HanuMan another Sankranthi movie that had a fantastic opening weekend.
The director of Guntur Kaaram Trivirkam Srinivas, is responsible for Mahesh's blockbusters Athadu and Khaleja. Needless to say, Guntur Kaaram fell short of everyone's lofty expectations.
Mutual admiration
Meanwhile, earlier, Mahesh praised SRK's Jawan, released in September 2023. He had posted on X, "#Jawan... blockbuster cinema... @Atlee_dir delivers king-size entertainment with the King himself!! He comes up with his career's best film. The aura, charisma, and screen presence of @iamsrk are unmatched. He’s on fire here!! Jawan will break his own records. How cool is that? Stuff of the legends! (sic)"
Well, we do enjoy this mutual admiration between stars across the film industries.
