Lionsgate declared the release date of its new addition to the jigsaw-verse, Saw XI. Though not much is known about it, producer Oren Koules has offered some answers about its position in the timeline
Saw X hit the theatres in September 2023 and reinvigorated the beloved series that was beginning to gather a little dust. Now, much to the delight of fans, Lionsgate has announced the release date of Saw XI as September 27, 2024, for now. Though no official plot or cast details have been revealed, franchise producer Oren Koules has offered some details about the upcoming Saw installment.
A surprising update came after the film’s release date declaration, the exit of Saw X writers Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger. Considering the amount of success and raving reviews the film got, it seems like a bizarre change at this point. But if there is a chance to see Tobin Bell as Jigsaw on screen again, the fans are going to be pouring in.
Saw X served as a sequel to the first Saw and occurred before Saw II. The film saw Jigsaw travel to Mexico with Amanda, for a supposedly miraculous treatment for his debilitating brain cancer. However, after trusting the doctor Cecilia in charge completely, he stumbles headfirst into a rude shock when he realizes he has been conned and lied to.
Furious, Jigsaw and his protege Amanda kidnap those responsible for the scam and begin what they do best. Create dangerous gory tests that test the limits of the human instinct for survival and morality. Saw X grossed $110.6 million on a $13 million budget and received a positive response from fans and critics alike.
In an interview with the SFX Magazine (via Screen Rant), Oren Koules revealed the position of the film in the non-linear and convoluted Saw timeline. The chronological order for viewing the Saw films stand- Jigsaw, Saw, Saw X, Saw II, Saw III, Saw IV, Saw V, Saw VI, Spiral: From the Book of Saw.
According to Koules, Saw XI will follow the events of the spectacular Saw II prequel, Saw X. Here’s why, “Cecilia is still alive, and Tobin and Shawnee are in a foreign country still. So, that, to me, would be the natural place to take at least the next one.”
Since Cecilia, the main antagonist responsible for taking advantage of Jigsaw’s trust is still alive, the possibilities of revenge are endless from both ends. Though there is no confirmation yet if Tobin Bell will return to reprise his role as the Jigsaw Killer, going by Koules’ affirmation, there is a high chance of it becoming a reality.
