Saudi Vellakka is helmed by Operation Java director Tharun Moorthy and is based on a true story
Director Tharun Moorthy’s second directorial venture, Saudi Vellakka, hit theatres on December 2. The movie, which is reportedly based on a true story, is a social drama about a legal case and the toll it takes on the people who are involved.
The film, which had completed its shoot earlier this year, stars Lukman Avaran, Devi Varma, Binu Pappu, Dhanya Ananya, Riya Saira, Remya Suresh, Gokulan and Sujith Sankar in lead roles. Set in a coastal village named Saudi near Chellanam, the film is about a legal case that an elder woman named Aisha gets entangled in after she hits a child out in a fit of anger. The case gets blown out of proportion as more people enter the fray, but the ones truly affected by it are Aisha (Devi Varma) and her family.

Through Aisha’s story of turning up at the court hearing for 13 years, Tharun also paints a picture at the number of legal cases awaiting verdicts in the country and the people who are awaiting justice. The movie has Sharan Velayudhan as its cinematographer and Palee Francis as its music director.
Saudi Vellakka, which is produced by Sandip Senan’s Urvashi Theatres, has a bunch of newcomers as part of the cast. The film’s OTT rights have been snapped by Sony LIV, which is expected to begin streaming the movie by January 2023. Tharun’s Operation Java’s streaming rights were bought by ZEE5 in 2021.
In an earlier interview with us, Tharun had said that Saudi Vellakka, much like Operation Java, has several different layers – humour, emotions and messages of social commitment, but it essentially is a family drama. The reviews of the film also highlight it’s the family sentiments that has worked the best in the movie to connect it with the audience.
