Satyagraha was released during a time of political upheaval in India, with many drawing comparisons to political activist Anna Hazare. The film tells the story of a father and son who find themselves on opposing sides of a system, waging a battle of ideologies and approaches. When asked about the Anna Hazare connection, Amitabh Bachchan chose to dodge the question, according to Hindustan Times.
"Any kind of effort that is made can never go to waste; somewhere it leaves an impression," the veteran actor said. He added, "I’m sure there are people who want to express themselves peacefully. And many things have moved forward… like in the case of the Delhi rape victim, for example, where they brought in a law, a very strong law… so you can’t say that nothing has happened as a result of satyagraha (non-violence)."
