Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of Netflix's blockbuster series 'Squid Game', has a new story to tell. Along with season 2 of the show, Hwang is reportedly also developing a satirical comedy show that focuses on the creation of Squid Game and his own experiences of dealing with the show's incredible success. The spin-off show, while in its nascent stages of development, is tentatively titled The Best Show on the Planet.
Hwang Dong-hyuk recently spoke to Deadline.com about the inception and eventual making of the show and how his life turned on its head overnight, thanks to its mega success on Netflix. He would reveal that The Best Show on the Planet will be a "reflection on the success of Squid Game", how it was originally thought of and developed, and also the unprecedented change that his own life experienced during and post all the mania.
The concept of Squid Game is derived from a Korean children's game but the show's version was anything but fun and innocuous. In the Netflix show, those knee-deep in debt participate in a cutthroat game that promises a whopping amount as prize money upon winning but losing would only lead to one thing - death. The show, aside from its many thrilling moments, also won acclaim for blending genre elements like crime and comedy with social commentary. Interestingly, Hwang Dong-hyuk had to face several rejections for Squid Game in the early years because many cited it to be non-commercial or complicated, and the show eventually came to being almost 13 years later.
With The Best Show on the Planet Hwang Dong-hyuk is said to have three exciting tasks in hand. He is also currently working on the second season of 'Squid Game' for Netflix and is reportedly adapting Umberto Eco's book into a feature film script - more details regarding both are to be divulged.
