Sargun Mehta has called out Aamir Khan’s Punjabi accent in his upcoming film Laal Singh Chaddha. The Television actress, who is currently ruling in Pollywood, also however defends the actor stating that learning Punjabi is a lot of work, especially for those who don’t have that kind of an upbringing. For the uninitiated, Sargun herself made the switch from Hindi to Punjabi industry.

While talking to India.com, Sargun appreciated Aamir for trying to take up a versatile role. She appreciated him as an actor but nonetheless added, “I can say that he could have done a bit better but jitna bhi unhone kia hain bahot kaam and mehnat lagti hain sirf utna karne mein bhi.”

The actress, best known for her role as Bani in Qismat, pointed out that if Aamir would have spoken in pure Punjabi, the viewers might not have been able to understand him. A recent example of two characters talking in pure Punjabi is Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani in Shershaah.

Just like Punjabi, Sargun also said that if Aamir was to do a Bengali film next and speak too many Bengali words, there could be a time when nobody might understand him. Thus, she defended the actor stating that he used a broken Punjabi to make it more relatable to the viewers. She also stressed that Aamir is not a Punjabi himself so it is a tough job.

Many Bollywood films today are a mix of various languages. Punjabi actor Gurnaam Bhullar points that out and says that films are pan-Indian so they can be shot in Hindi primarily but have Punjabi, Marathi or Tamil verses and that should not matter.

Sargun Mehta will next appear in the Punjabi movie Sohreyan Da Pind Aa Gaya with Gurnam Bhullar. Meanwhile, Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha, which is the Hindi remake of Tom Hanks’ Forrest Gump, will see a Punjabi soldier trying to sail through life. The movie also features Kareena Kapoor Khan and Mona Singh in pivotal roles.
