Saoirse Ronan has come on board to star in the biographical drama, The Outrun. The film is based on a memoir of the same name written by Scottish author Amy Liptrot.

The memoir traces Liptrot’s journey back to her family’s old farm in Orkey, in the aftermath of a stint at a rehabilitation centre due to her alcoholism. As the young woman spends time at her family home, spending her days enjoying the beauty of the Scottish island, she takes a trip down memory lane as she reminisces about her past and childhood. The book reveals the reasons Liptrot chose to leave behind her remote and quiet home for the bustle of city life in London and the events that happened there which made her addiction spiral out of control. The book has been translated into more than 12 languages.

The upcoming film is directed by German filmmaker Nora Fingscheidt, perhaps best known for helming the 2019 drama System Crasher, and the Sandra Bullock starrer The Unforgivable.

Fingscheidt will write the film’s script along with Liptrot. Ronan will also serve as a producer of the movie. The film is produced under the banners of Brock Media, Arcade Pictures, Weydemann Bros.

In a statement, Ronan had revealed what drew her to Liptrot’s story, marvelling at how the author was able to capture the story of about one of the darkest moments of her life. The actress said that she always wanted to essay a role such as that, which was authentic in its hopefulness and disarray.

The Academy Award-nominated actress is popular for films such as Little Women and Ladybird and was last seen in Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch. She will next be seen in See How They Run, which also features Sam Rockwell.
