Gulu Gulu, directed by Rathna Kumar, will hit the screens on July 29. The filmmaker, who helmed Meyaadha Maan (2017) and Aadai (2019), also penned dialogues for Vijay’s Master and Kamal Haasan’s Vikram.
Gulu Gulu, featuring Santhanam in the lead, will release on July 29 in theatres, the makers announced on social media, recently. Touted to be a comedy-drama, the film is directed by Rathna Kumar, who rose to fame with Meyaadha Maan (2017) and Aadai (2019).
Gulu Gulu also stars George Maryan, Dheena, Namita Krishnamurthy, Lollu Sabha Maran, Seshu, Athulya Chandra and Pradeep Rawat. The film will be about the misadventures of a person with a nomadic lifestyle who lives life like every day is his last. Santhanam will essay the role of a nomad named 'Google'.
Produced by Raj Narayanan under Circle Box Entertainment, this one has music by Santhosh Narayanan, cinematography by Vijay Kartik Kannan and editing by Philomin Raj.
Rathna Kumar, amid making films, co-write scripts with his filmmaker-friend, Lokesh Kanagaraj. “When Lokesh and I were working on Maanagaram and Meyaadha Maan respectively, we had a meeting at Besant Nagar beach and agreed to help each other in our films,” he said, in an interview with an English daily. Even during Kaithi, Rathna Kumar added he helped Lokesh a little, but that was more in a “friendly-manner”.
Rathna Kumar identifies himself as a descriptive writer and expects the scenes to be exactly as he had envisioned. “However, there are many practical difficulties and differences in executing them. During such times, I reminded myself to stick to being the writer and let the filmmaker do the rest,” he said.
The writer-director was working on an anthology as well. He told Cinema Express that his projects were all in various stages of development. There is a plan to make a film with Vaibhav shortly, he added. Speaking about doing films for the OTT space, he said he was exploring a mini web series for the digital medium. “The script, set in a time frame of 50 hours, is almost done. I am hoping to make a period film someday—something set before independence maybe. I am inspired by the story of Netaji’s disappearance and want to make a fictional story about it,” he stated.
A fan of Thalapathy Vijay, Rathna Kumar, wants to make a film with the mega actor. “Who wouldn’t want to? I have had a story for him since my college days. When the time comes, it will happen!”
