Calling Alia Bhatt "a great actor", Sanjay Leela Bhansali confided that he had waited for over 17 years to make Gangubai Kathiawadi with her, as he had recognised her talent when she was very young.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Alia Bhatt's film Gangubai Kathiawadi has received much acclaim since its release. In a recent interview, Bhansali spoke about the unconventional way he used to extract the maximum acting out of Alia Bhatt and the cast.
The filmmaker was referring to a scene where Gangubai, in a fit of anger, 'explodes' while she's talking on the phone. "There’s a very strange incident to that when she was preparing for it. I wanted a certain atmosphere. So, suddenly, I saw some staff laughing or giggling and presumed that they were laughing at me," Bhansali told Film Companion.
He said that he "exploded" at everyone on set, and it was his way to direct those vibes into Bhatt's performance. He then added that he's never told it was just a ploy. "Till date she doesn’t know that this is what I did to get her into that space. But as a director, I don’t like to give direct instructions to people, because it limits the actor’s imagination."
Calling Bhatt "a great actor", he confided that he had waited for over 17 years to make Gangubai Kathiawadi with her, as he had recognised her talent when she was very young.
Gangubai Kathiawadi also stars Ajay Devgn, Seema Pahwa and newcomer Shantanu Maheshwari.
