Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta says that the success of Jawan and Gadar 2 cannot prove that people are back in the theatres.
Post coronavirus pandemic and rice of OTT content, the Hindi film industry has had a difficult few years as a result of the audience's absence from theaters. There were also theories that now OTT platforms will take over and theatres will die. But then with the success of RRR and Pathaan, the business started coming in and with the current two releases Gadar 2 and Jawan, the narrative has completely changed, and it appears that the audience is once again in theaters
Talking about the same, filmmaker Sanjay Gupta have some different thoughts. The Kaabil director recently stated in an interview that the theaters will once again be vacant after the excitement surrounding Jawan and Gadar 2 subsides.
According to Sanjay, who spoke with ETimes, Gadar 2 and Jawan are big-profile movies with big budgets that took two to three years to produce. After these movies have enjoyed successful runs, people will wait for the next big film to arrive. He was quoted as saying: "All the big stars do one film a year. No big star does two films. SRK did not have a release in the last five years. Hrithik and Aamir also do one film in two years.”
He added, “It can’t be the case that only these top 5-6 stars’ films work. When people go to the theatres to back a combination of films then I’d say that the audiences are back.”
Sanjay Gupta also claimed that audiences would rather watch films on OTT platforms than in theaters if they didn't have a franchise, a nostalgic element, or a star tied to them. He stated that although the box office results recently have provided some respite to the exhibitors, the business is still in a worrying condition. They’re happy for a while but in their hearts, they also know, “Yeh chaar din ki chaandni hai,” he said.
