The period movie, which hit theatres on June 3, also has Manushi Chillar and Sanjay Dutt as part of the cast
After a lacklustre run at the box office, Akshay Kumar’s big budget historical war drama Samrat Prithviraj is gearing up for its OTT release. The movie, which released in theatres on June 3, also has Manushi Chillar, Sanjay Dutt and Sonu Sood in pivotal roles.
Directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi, the film chronicles the life of Rajput king Prithviraj Chauhan and his battles with Muhammed Chori during the 12th century. While Akshay plays the titular role of the king, Manushi, who made her acting debut with the movie, essays the role of princess Sanyogita.
Made on a budget exceeding Rs 200 crore, the period film first went on floors in 2019 but had a start-and-stop schedule owing to the pandemic. The principal photography of the movie was completed in February 2021. The makers had carried out an extensive promotional campaign ahead of the movie’s theatrical release, with a special show for Amit Shah, Union Minister of Home Affairs, who had lauded the film.
Samrat Prithviraj, however, failed at the box office with the movie expected to recover just Rs 80 crore from its worldwide theatrical run. The movie faced stiff competition from Kartik Aaryan’s Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 and the Tamil action-thriller Vikram, starring Kamal Haasan, Fahadh Faasil and Vijay Sethupathi. Both the movies had surpassed Rs 150 crore and is still going strong in theatres.
The Akshay Kumar-starrer is now set to drop on Amazon Prime Video on July 1. The film, which is produced by Yash Raj Films, meanwhile was declared tax free in states such as Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Uttarkhand. However, this still didn’t help the poor performance of the film and that’s touted to be one of the chief reason the producers have now opted for an early OTT release for the movie, which was also dubbed in Tamil and Telugu.
