Also starring Manushi Chhillar, Sonu Sood and Sanjay Dutt, the movie hit theatres on June 3.
Akshay Kumar’s Samrat Prithviraj hit theatres around the country on June 3 with a lot of expectations, and these expectations are not always a good thing. The hype around the movie seems to have caught up with it, as Samrat Prithviraj looks to be slowing down at the box office.
As reported by Box Office India, the movie has collected only Rs. 4.25-4.50 crore nett range on Tuesday, meaning that it dropped 10-15%. According to Bollywood Hungama, the morning shows of the historical war drama are being cancelled due to low footfalls.
Having made Rs 39.40 crore on its first weekend, the movie’s collections have drastically slowed down since. Trade Analyst Ramesh Bala reports that the movie made Rs. 5.00 crore on Monday and just Rs. 4.25 yesterday, taking its total in the country to Rs 48.65 crore.
It is reported that the movie got a large number of shows in multiplexes and that the shows were reduced on Monday and Tuesday due to limited occupancy. This trend is expected to continue on Wednesday and Thursday as well.
Reportedly made at a budget of Rs. 200 crore, Samrat Prithviraj could end up being Akshay Kumar’s second box office failure if the trend continues. The actor was last seen in Bachchan Panday, which failed to make a dent at the box office following negative reviews.
“It emphasises more on the Hindu Dharma and the freeing of Hindustan from the shackles of invaders from the neighbouring countries. However, it becomes kind of preachy with dialogues being repeated for every character possible.” read the movie’s review on OTTplay.
Featuring Manushi Chhillar, Sonu Sood and Sanjay Dutt, in supporting roles, the movie is directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi. The movie, which is bankroled by Yash Raj Films, is now playing in theatres around the country.
