On his birthday today, the actor tells us that Salaga will probably get a festive release on OTT.
Kannada actor Duniya Vijay’s directorial debut Salaga was one of the most highly-anticipated films of 2021. Initially expected to be an Ugadi 2020 release, the film was delayed by the pandemic, with the makers steadfastly holding on to it, until such time they could bring it to theatres at 100% occupancy. In fact, they even resisted the temptation to go the OTT way and waited it out, finally hitting theatres on October 14, in what was expected to be a direct clash with Kiccha Sudeep’s Kotigobba 3. The Sudeep film, though, ran into trouble with the distributors and didn’t make it, giving Salaga a good head-start on day 1, which, complemented by positive critic feedback and word-of-mouth publicity, worked well for the film.
Salaga had a good run at the box office and is, surprisingly, still not on OTT, even though films that came just prior, with and after are already on streaming platforms. On the actor-director’s birthday today, we reached out to see if there’s any good news for fans in terms of Salaga’s OTT release. “The satellite and digital rights of Salaga have been sold to Udaya TV, which means it will stream on SunNXT at some point. To the best of my knowledge, they are now looking for a good festive release date,” says Vijay. Tell him that the next festival in Karnataka is in early April only (Ugadi) and the actor remains non-committal, saying it was up to the platform to decide what’s best. Well, for all you know it could be a Shivaratri release in March too, which is not far off. Guess we will have to wait for official confirmation on that.
Meanwhile, the actor, who was expected to be on the set of #NBK107 in Hyderabad, is on a small getaway with his family. “My portions have been pushed to sometime in February, so I got bit of a breather, which I am spending with my family at a place close to Kerala,” he says. Vijay had earlier taken to social media asking his fans not to congregate at his house to celebrate his big day, as he would not have any festivities, given that his parents and actor Puneeth Rajkumar passed away not long ago and added that he would not be home.
