Prabhas starrer Salaar, which hit the theaters on December 22, is set to beat Mohanlal’s Neru, which was released a day before, at the Kerala box office. Here’s a detailed analysis...
The Christmas season arrived this time with three massive releases from all the three major film industries. Mohanlal, the Malayalam superstar made a massive comeback to the big screens after a low phase, with the recently released courtroom drama Neru. The Jeethu Joseph directorial emerged as a major box office success, thanks to the rave reviews and word of mouth publicity.
Meanwhile, Telugu superstar Prabhas also made a grand comeback to cinemas with Salaar, the action thriller helmed by KGF director Prashanth Neel. The pan-Indian movie made a massive opening at the box office and emerged as the biggest opener of 2023, beating Shah Rukh Khan’s blockbuster films Pathaan and Jawan. When it comes to the Kerala box office, Salaar successfully dethroned Mohanlal’s Neru, with its collections.
Salaar vs Neru at Kerala box office
As reported earlier, Mohanlal’s Neru has been performing extremely well at the box office and made a total collection of Rs. 3.04 Crores on its opening day. However, the collection dipped on Day 2, owing to the massive release of Salaar, the Prabhas starrer which also stars Malayalam actor-filmmaker Prithviraj Sukumaran in a key role. The Jeethu Joseph directorial made a total collection of Rs. 2.13 Crores on Day 2, and a total of Rs. 5.17 Crores within the first 2 days of its release.

However, Salaar has made a massive opening at the Kerala box office, by making a total collection of around Rs. 5 Crores, and a gross collection of Rs. 4.65 Crores. In that case, the Prashanth Neel directorial has clearly overpowered the Mohanlal starrer at the Kerala box office. The mass action thriller also has all the chances to emerge as the top grosser after its first weekend, owing to the heavy audience rush and massive publicity.
Will things change after the first weekend?
However, things might change at the Kerala box office, after the first weekend the initial rush. Mohanlal’s Neru has clearly emerged as the audience favourite, thanks to its great making and brilliant performances. The word-of-mouth publicity is clearly helping the film, as the audience rush has reportedly increased on the third day of its release. The courtroom drama has also witnessed a major increase in the number of shows, owing to the addition of special shows across the state.
Salaar, on the other hand, has been receiving mixed reviews from the audiences, and the collections might get dipped in Kerala after the initial hype and first-weekend rush. We will have to wait to see if the Prabhas starrer manages to continue its dream run at the Kerala box office, even after the first weekend.
