Salaar: Is the Prabhas-Shruti Haasan starrer a romantic film at heart?

The latest reports concerning the plot of the film do strongly suggest that Prashanth Neel's epic has a "romantic undercurrent"

Hombale Films and Prashanth Neel are mounting Salaar on a massive scale and are pulling out all the stops to deliver on the promise of a spectacle. The film hit the headlines recently after the shooting got underway in Italy with the cities of Matera, Naples, and Rome, along with the Hungarian capital Budapest, being part of the roster. Matera, incidentally, is where the prologue action sequence of the James Bond film No Time to Die (starring Daniel Craig) was shot.

According to Variety, team Salaar is set to move to Naples to shoot a few crucial portions of the film. The Naples schedule involves extensive use of drones and spotlights for the night shoot, adds the report, to suggest that Neel and Co. are employing at the highest standards.

Another highlight of the Variety report is the loose synopsis of the film. Accordingly, Salaar is a love story in essence whose plot revolves around "two young people from two different countries who fall in love, despite the distance and their cultural differences, and face many obstacles". This particular description comes in stark contrast to the existing one-liner of the plot - as per IMDb, Salaar is about a gang leader who tries to keep a promise made to his dying friend and takes on the other criminal gangs.

Regardless, one can expect Prashanth Neel's film to have strong undertones of romance. With Prabhas speculatively playing a dual role, it would be interesting to see if one of the two characters becomes that "dying friend". Or, could it be that the dual role features two diametrically opposites characters, with Prabhas playing both the protagonist and the antagonist in the film?

Shruti Haasan plays the role of a journalist named Aadhya in the film. There's also a possible link between the characters played by Prithviraj Sukumaran and Jagapathi Babu and the fact that they share the same last name could be the giveaway: the Malayalam superstar plays Vardharaja Mannaar and Jagapathi Babu is named Rajamanaar.
