Saakini Daakini, the action comedy, starring Nivetha Thomas and Regina Cassandra, directed by Sudheer Varma, hit theatres on September 16. The film is the Telugu remake of the Korean hit Midnight Runners, jointly produced by Suresh Babu, Sunitha Tati and Hyunwoo Thomas Kim under Kross Pictures, Suresh Productions and Guru Films. They had also bankrolled another Korean remake, Oh Baby, earlier. The film will be gearing up for an OTT premiere in October.
The film revolves around Shalini and Damini, women from contrasting backgrounds who meet at the police training academy. There’s friction between the two from day one and their plight is worsened when they realise they’re roommates. Both can’t stand each other’s presence. A crisis forges an unlikely bond among them. One night, as they step out for an outing during a weekend, they notice a young girl being abducted by a group of men. To what extent will they go to rescue her?
Bhanuchander, Sudarshan, Mirchi Hemanth and Prudhvi Raj too important roles in the film. Popular technician Richard Prasad is cinematographer of the film. Mikey McCleary and Naresh Kumaran are the music directors for the film. Viplav Nyshadam is the editor of the film while Gandhi Nadikudikar is the art director. Vijay Shankar Donkada is the line producer. Netflix has acquired the streaming rights of the slick actioner, which was initially aimed for a direct-to-OTT release.
However, for reasons best known to the makers, the producers revised the release deal with Netflix later and secured a theatrical release first. The streaming giant plans to premiere the film in the first half of October. Saakini Daakini had a limited release in screens and received largely favourable reviews for its slick action and sharp screenplay.
