Carter had won her first Oscar for costume design on Black Panther(2018).
This year’s Academy Awards saw history being made on a number of fronts. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever followed in the footsteps of its predecessor, receiving multiple nominations at the Academy Awards. The film won costume designed Ruth Carter her second Oscar award for costume design, making her the first Black woman to win two oscars.
Carter won her first Oscar for her work on the first standalone Black Panther film, which starred the late Chadwick Boseman. In her acceptance speech for her second win, the designer said “Thank you to the Academy for recognizing the superhero that is a Black woman”.
Carter then went on to talk about the recent demise of her mother, and said that her work on the film seemed to prepare her for the same. She also asked Boseman to ‘take care’ of her mother and dedicated her award to her mother.
Black Panther(2018) had received a total of seven Oscar nominations, winning Best Production design, Best Costume Design, which Carter won, and Best Score. The sequel was nominated in five categories including for Best Costume design, which Carter won again, Best Supporting Actress for Angela Bassett, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Visual Effects and Best Original Song.
