Rudhra Garuda Purana’s Rishi: ‘I’m still widely known for Kavaludaari because…’
In Kannada cinema circles, actor Rishi is remembered either for his film Operation Alamelamma or Kavaludaari, with the latter grabbing more eyeballs on account of being a Hemanth M Rao directorial. In the time since, Rishi has done films like Nodi Swamy Ivanu Irode Heege, Ramana Avatara as protagonist, but they’ve not had the impact he’d hoped for. Does it make Rishi uncomfortable that 5 years hence he’s still known for Kavaludaari?

“Each project that we do, the intention is always right. There is no film team in the world that decides to make a bad movie. The intention is to make a good film, but cinema making is a community effort and there are so many people involved and this is one profession where democracy doesn’t really work. Sometimes it does work, like, for instance, in Daaku Maharaj, where there is a lot of freedom for everyone to deliver, and the director is only capturing the best on offer,” Rishi explains in a conversation with Kairam Vaashi for Rudhra Garuda Purana.
Is it a problem of too many cooks spoiling the broth? Rishi reckons that is true, in a sense, citing a hypothetical situation of a filmmaker wanting to shoot a certain sequence in a railway station, but the cinematographer vetoing that decision for want of adequate lighting, etc. While the change of location may seem trivial, in the larger scheme of things it does reflect, he says. “It won’t hit the right notes,” says the actor, elaborating on why his film choices since Kavaludaari have not made the right noise.

Projects not working commercially are definitely a setback, admits Rishi. But he’s never been bogged down by these results. His intention has always been to entertain audiences or leave them with something thought-provoking. When that doesn’t come across, he does address his concerns with the filmmaker, who then decides whether to take a suggestion from the actor or to leave it. “Right now, I know exactly why certain things have not worked. The day I go wrong with my selections or I feel I have lost touch with the pulse of the audience is when I will be worried,” he says.
