S.S. Rajamouli is one of the biggest Indian filmmakers today and a director who has delivered two of the biggest blockbuster Indian movies of all time. The director has now revealed that he wanted to make a web series based on Ponniyin Selvan, which is now being made into a movie by Mani Ratnam.

During an interview with Rajeev Masand, which also features The Gray Man directors Joe and Anthony Russo, Rajamouli was asked by the host if he is thinking of making a movie straight to streaming after the success RRR has received on Netflix.

Replying to the question, the director, who was joining the interview virtually from home said, “I have some ideas which I have been contemplating on taking to streaming, irrespective of the success of RRR. For example, Ponniyin Selvan, which Mani Ratnam sir is doing now, for a long time I had it in my mind to take it to streaming. Because that is the perfect way to tell that particular story. You cannot tell that story easily in a film, but if you have a web series, you can tell the story in 8 hours or 20 hours.”

Mani Ratnam is currently getting ready for the release of Ponniyin Selvan: I, which is based on the famous 1955 Tamil novel of the same name, written by journalist Kalki Krishnamurthy. The movie has a star-studded cast that includes Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha, Shobitha Dhulipala, R. Parthiban, Jayaram, Lal, Aishwarya Lakshmi and more.

The story will be told in the span of two movies and the first part is currently slated to hit theatres on September 30, 2022. The magnum opus is one of the most-anticipated Indian movies of the year.
