The acclaimed filmmaker also talked about his dream project Mahabharata, which he hopes to direct this decade
SS Rajamouli is now a name to reckon with, not just in India but world cinema. The filmmaker’s latest release RRR, starring NTR Jr and Ram Charan, has already gone on to create records in the worldwide box office as well as in the OTT world, and it’s no wonder that people across the country are looking at him to helm the next big venture from India for the world.
Rajamouli’s Eega, Baahubali movies and RRR have charted his rise on top as a visionary filmmaker who has the ability to marry brilliant content as well as spectacular filmmaking – both aspects that are much in demand these days. What also sets the director’s films apart is that he stays true to Indian audience’s sensibilities, making his movies far more relatable.
In a recent interview with Mint, Rajamouli talked about the country being capable of making projects that have global appeal like Squid Game or even Money Heist. “That’s not happened yet, but the doors are open,” he said, adding that the people globally have now become accustomed to cultures and stories of every country and hence “are more open-minded”. This has also made it easier for filmmakers to find an audience for their content than a decade ago, said the director.
Rajamouli, however, insisted that a filmmaker should always stay true to himself and his stories while making projects and shouldn’t change that to cater to different audiences. The director said that his vision has always been to make “bigger and better” films and to tell Indian stories to the rest of the world.
In line with that, the Baahubali director said that he wants to work on Mahabharata, which he touted as his dream project, after he completes three to four movies in the future. Rajamouli also explained that he wasn’t surprised by the success of RRR, which has won over a large section of global audience after its Netflix release last month, as it was something that they had expected and worked hard for.
