Chaya Singh, who was last seen in Bhairathi Ranagal, reprising her role as Vedavathi Ranagal, plays Viraat’s mother, Seetha, in Royal, which releases on January 24
Royal, the Dinakar Thoogudeepa directed film with Viraat in the lead, is, according to the filmmaker, a tale of a mother and son. Bhairathi Ranagal’s Vedavathi, Chaya Singh plays the mother, Seetha, in the film, a role that she says she took up almost immediately after the narration because of the strength of the character and the team she would work with, especially Dinakar.
“Dinakar is one of the best directors I have worked with to date. He is very passionate about his craft, which makes him an extremely demanding perfectionist. And I say this with the utmost respect. He will not rest until he’s got exactly what he’s envisioned for the film. All the technicians on his team support his vision that if he wants a shot in a certain way, no matter the number of retakes, he will call it wraps only when he is 100% satisfied. There is no way around it. He will not compromise on quality,” says Chaya, speaking to Kannada Pichhar.
The reason that everyone works towards giving Dinakar what he’s asked for is that he does not make unreasonable demands. “He only asks for what is absolutely necessary and will enhance the film, and hence, everyone willingly does whatever he needs for that shot,” she adds.

In the film, Chaya is paired with Achyuth Kumar, as Viraat’s parents. “Seetha is the kind of character that when seen onscreen, any actor will feel that they should have gotten the role. I feel blessed to represent such a strong and value-based character. Working with Viraat was quite a pleasure; he’s a very good actor. The mother-son bond worked out quite well between us,” says Chaya.
Royal is one of three Kannada films releasing on January 24, and will be in competition with Rudhra Garuda Purana and Forest. It is the first of 5 films that Jayanna Films is doing with Viraat.
