RK/RKAY: Actor-director Rajat Kapoor reveals how 800 people crowdfunded the Mallika Sherawat starrer film

Rajat Kapoor is back in the director’s chair once again for his upcoming film RK/RKAY, which he also stars in. The actor-director recently opened up about his journey in getting the film made, and revealed that it was crowdfunded by almost 800 people.

In conversation with IANS, Kapoor spoke of how indie(independent) films always had a hard time to find funding. So for his directorial venture, Kapoor had decided to go in for crowdfunding from the very start. He had put in some of his own money and reached out to some people as well for funds. In the middle of the funding process, Priyam Srivastava and Harshita Karkare had come on board the film as co producers as well, producing the film under their banner Priyanshi Films. “Their faith in the film was amazing, and the film could get made, only because they joined hands", said Kapoor.

Kapoor revealed that almost 800 people had been involved in funding the film. People had contributed amounts ranging from Rs 100 to Rs 50,000. Nflicks Pvt. Ltd have also produced the film.

The upcoming film revolves around the story of an anxious director whose troubles start to brew when he is informed that the protagonist of his film has gone missing from the film’s negatives. In addition to Kapoor, the film also stars Mallika Sherawat, Kubbra Sait, Ranvir Shorey, Manu Rishi Chadha, Chandrachoor Rai, Abhijeet Deshpande, Abhishek Sharrma, Grace Girdhar, and Vaishali Malhara in prominent roles. The film marks Kapoor’s first acting role since Genraiyaan.

RK/RKAY will be released in theatres on July 22. The film has been showcased at several International film festivals such as River to River Festival in Florence, Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, Shanghai international film festival, Austin Film Festival, and Pune International Film Festival.
