The Academy Award nominated director, whose career spans over four decades, is set to receive the inaugural award on September 10.
Acclaimed British director Ridley Scott will be the recipient of the Cartier Glory to the Filmmaker award at the 78th edition of the International Film Festival at Venice, according to a report in the Hindu. The organizers of the award stated that the recognition is to commemorate a ‘particularly original’ contribution made to the film industry in modern times. The festival will take place from September 1 to 11 this year.
The festival’s director Alberto Barbera said that it is the distinctive elements of Scott’s filmmaking, his personal approach and ability to blend entertainment with the expectations of the public and critics alike, which earned him the honour. He also mentioned how in his prolific career, the director had managed to inject new lifeblood into the 30 or so films he had helmed.
Scott will receive the honour on September 10, post the screening of his upcoming film, The Last Duel, starring Matt Damon, Adam Driver and Jodie Comer. The historical drama tells the story of the final duel in France that had legal sanction, conducted between a king and his squire, when the latter is accused of rape by the queen.
In addition to the Last Duel, the celebrated director also has another movie, House of Gucci, coming up. Featuring Lady Gaga and Adam driver in lead roles, the film tells the true story of a woman who arranged the assassination of her head husband, a prominent figure in the Gucci empire.
