The rape and murder of an on-duty junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital sparked protests across the city. Amid the uproar, actor Kanchan Mullick made controversial statements about the participating junior doctors. He further said that those celebrities who received government honours might want to return their awards. He was criticised by his co-workers. Many of them started returning their government awards even after Kanchan apologised.

After veteran playwright Chandan Sen, theatre director and actor Biplab Bandyopadhyay and actress Sanjeeta returned their awards, now actor Supriya Dutta, Debapratimm Dasgupta, and musician Subhadeep B Guha returned their awards.

In his social media post, Debapratimm made serious allegations against Kanchan. He wrote that when he received the Best Screenwriter award in 2018 from Mamata Banerjee, his friend Kanchan called and said, ‘How did you bow to that woman (CM Mamata Banerjee)?’ He further taunted him about his father who was a left-leaning cultural activist of IPTA. Debapratimm admitted that he had no proof as he did not record the conversation. “After this, Kanchan became an MLA. Today he explained what this prize means,” wrote the actor, adding that he wished to return the award but doesn't have that prize money of Rs one lakh. “I will borrow money and return that award…. My father is my first teacher. This will be my tribute to Teachers' Day.”

Chandan will return his 2017 prestigious Dinabandhu Mitra Puroskar, the highest honour in theatre conferred by the Paschim Banga Natya Akademi, Biplab and Sanjeeta will return the award they received for direction and supporting actress at Sisir Mancha in 2024, and 2021 respectively.
